District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro’s office on Friday (Feb. 8) secured the conviction of the man responsible for a 7th Ward killing in Summer 2017.

Levour Jiles, who was to stand trial for second-degree murder and face a possible life sentence next Monday, pleaded guilty Friday to a reduced charge of manslaughter in the fatal shooting of 40-year-old Arthur Hubbard. Jiles also pleaded guilty as charged to obstruction of justice in a homicide investigation.

Jiles, 37, is expected to receive a 30-year prison term for his crimes when Criminal District Judge Karen Herman imposes his sentence on Feb. 11. The judge first will hear victim-impact statements from Hubbard’s family.

The men were involved in a dispute outside a business before Jiles shot Hubbard multiple times inside a white Pontiac sedan. The car crashed into two parked vehicles near the corner of St. Bernard Avenue and North Roman Street around 5:40 p.m. on June 23, 2017.

Hubbard was rushed to University Medical Center, but did not survive his wounds. New Orleans police investigators booked Jiles with the murder nine days later, on July 2, 2017.

Assistant District Attorney Angad Ghai prosecuted the case.
