Criminal Complaints

Complaints of criminal activity in Orleans Parish should be reported to the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) or, in some instances, to the Louisiana State Police (LSP). These are the chief law enforcement agencies with the resources and mandate to launch criminal investigations of crimes committed in New Orleans.

The Orleans Parish District Attorney’s office has its own dedicated staff of investigators tasked with assisting prosecutors in the location of witnesses, documents and the preparation of cases. But the impact of recent budget cuts from the city has greatly restricted the resources of our investigative team. The OPDA is rarely able to launch independent investigations requiring extensive time, manpower or expense, but will work to supplement such investigations by police to prepare cases for trial.

An exception is our Economic Crimes Unit, which investigates instances of financial crimes such as theft through embezzlement, forgery, contractor fraud and the passing of fraudulent checks. Complaints of this nature can be made by scheduling an office appointment with an ECU investigator.

To schedule an appointment after collecting supporting documentation for your complaint, call 504-822-2414. Walk-in appointments, if available, are accepted at the District Attorney’s office at 619 South White St.
