MOT Unit

The Major Offense Trials (MOT) Unit of the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s office is responsible for trying the most serious violent felony offenses in New Orleans – primarily cases of murder, rape and armed robbery.

The Assistant District Attorneys comprising this elite group of prosecutors secured convictions in 21 of 23 murder and first-degree rape trials in which Orleans Parish juries rendered a verdict in 2018.

“I am extremely proud of the hard-working men and women of our MOT team,” District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro said. “These prosecutors handle the toughest cases against New Orleans’ most dangerous offenders, and they never waver in their dedication toward making our community safer. Each year, dozens of killers and rapists are taken off this city’s streets through their skill and commitment to justice.”

In 2016, the Metropolitan Crime Commission honored the OPDA’s MOT Unit with its prestigious Excellence in Law Enforcement Award.
